Washington - Morocco is a "unique" case in the region of North Africa and the Middle East (MENA) in terms of religious field reforms through the centrality of the institution of the Commander of the Faithful, Haim Malka, Deputy Director and Senior Fellow at the US Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), said Monday in Washington.

"There are countless lessons that we can learn from the Moroccan model of religious field reforms, which establish Morocco as a unique case because of the centrality of the institution of the Commander of the Faithful incarnated by king Mohammed VI", Malka underlined at a meeting to present the book entitled "Religious Radicalism after the Arab Uprisings" (CSIS, Editor John B. Alterman).

He noted that in the MENA region, the Kingdom "has the advantage" to have initiated, more than a decade ago, a successful reform of the religious field, and it is well ahead of many countries in the region and its immediate vicinity.

In this regard, Malka said that Morocco is undoubtedly the country that has witnessed "most progress" in the region in terms of religious field reforms, particularly through its restructuring and training of imams.

The US expert also stressed that the Kingdom, through its Constitution, enshrines the plural character of its national identity forged by the convergence of its Arab-Islamic, Amazigh and Sahara-Hassani components, nourished and enriched by its African, Andalusian, Jewish and Mediterranean tributaries.
