Rabat - Nearly 200,000 tourists from Morocco travelled to Spain in 2014, according to figures released by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.
Of the more than a million tourists from the Muslim world who visited Spain last year, Moroccans are ranked in the third place with 199,305 travellers. Algeria comes first with nearly 220,000 visitors, followed by Turkey 215,076 and Egypt 86,001.
According to the MasterCard and CresentRating’s 2015 Global Muslim Travel Index (GMTI), Spain is the ninth best destination for Muslim travelers outside the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
To express its increasing interest in the Muslim travel market, a market that grows annually by 8.5 per cent, Spain's Cordoba is hosting the first international Halal Congress in March.
The interest stems from data indicating that Muslim travellers spent an estimated $145 billion in 2014. Spain is definitely planning to get its share from the lucrative Muslim travel market, especially that the numbers of Muslim travellers are expected to grow to 150 million travelers by 2020 and spend nearly $200 billion per year.
