Rabat - The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ), an offshoot of Morocco’s domestic intelligence agency (DGST), dismantled on Tuesday a terrorist cell consisting of four members operating in the southern city of Laayoune, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
Investigations showed the loyalty of the busted cell to the terrorist organization known as IS, the statement said, adding that the members of the terrorist cell were plotting to perpetrate serious terrorist attacks in the Kingdom.
The members of the terrorist cell were set on replicating the horrendous methods used by IS after having issued a fatwa advocating the kidnaping and the burning alive of one of their acquaintances whom they accused of apostasy.
The investigations also revealed that the head of the cell, who has close ties with the operational member of IS, was plotting to use his considerable experience in making explosives to implement terrorist attacks against key targets in Morocco, the Interior Ministry added.
The Ministry recalled that this dismantlement is part of proactive efforts aiming at countering the terrorist threat.
The members of the terrorist cell will be brought before justice upon completion of investigations under the supervision of the general prosecutor, the same source said.
