Rabat- A Moroccan man was hailed as a hero by the Italian media on Friday, May 22nd, after he saved the life of a tourist who fell off Florence's Ponte Santa Trinita (Holy Trinity Bridge) into the Arno River.

Taoufik Chtouki, 28, dove into the Arno River to rescue a 25-year-old French tourist from the murky Florentine waters, according to Italy's ANSA news agency. The tourist is said to have fallen as he was leaning out to snap photos.

Eyewitnesses and police who raced to the scene applauded the Moroccan man who was riding past the bridge on a bicycle when he noticed that the tourist was fighting for his life, the same source added.

The Moroccan national has reportedly been living in Italy for four years as an undocumented immigrant.

"Toukif carried out an act of great valor and humanity that could have put his own life at risk," Mayor Dario Nardella wrote on Facebook. "Thank you Toukif".
