Rabat - On Thursday Moroccan law enforcement authorities arrested a gay couple who were caught publicly kissing before a revered site, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Interior.
According to the news website Goud, the two men kissed each other on the esplanade of Mosque Hassan in Rabat, the same place where two French women who were part of the Femen movement appeared kissing each other this past Tuesday.
The two women were arrested and deported immediately and are banned from entering Moroccan territory in the future.
According to the same source, the two men went to Hassan Mosque and kissed to show their solidarity with the two French women.
There is “a series of provocations and harassment carried out by foreign organizations that deliberately violate Moroccan laws... to undermine morality,” the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
Homosexuality is not tolerated in Morocco and is considered a crime.
According to article 489 of the country’s penal code, “anyone found guilty of carrying out “a deviant act with a person of the same sex” will be jailed for to up to three years.
This wave of protests against Morocco’s penal code with regards to homosexuality comes after the court of Taourirt in eastern Morocco sentenced three men to three years in prison for “practicing homosexuality” on May 23.
