Skhirat- Libyan negotiators meeting in Morocco for the 5th round of talks have reacted positively to a draft peace agreement put forward by the United Nations Organization, U.N. Secretary General's special envoy Bernardino Leon said Tuesday.
"We have distributed, as you have seen, a new proposed agreement. All I can tell you for now is that the reaction is positive," Leon told journalists after he presented to delegates Monday the draft on forming a national unity government.
Negotiators of Libyan conflicting parties resumed on Monday in the Moroccan Atlantic sea resort of Skhirate talks, described as "decisive" by the United Nations support mission in Libya (UNSMIL) under the aegis of the UN SG's special representative, with the participation of several parties, mainly the two rival parliaments, the Tripoli and the Tobrouk parliaments, and in the presence of several European ambassadors as well as speaker of the Moroccan House of Representatives, Ahmed Talbi Alami and minister-delegate for foreign affairs and cooperation, Mbarka Bouaida.
Leon said there was "sense of optimism" emerging from the talks, but was cautious pending deeper talks as the delegations will be heading in the evening to Berlin to meet with foreign ministers of the UN Security Council's permanent member states.
"The security track is important. We need strong support from the armed formations ... We will not succeed if we don't have their support," Leon said.
