Rabat - The Moroccan government intends to adopt drastic measures to combat the phenomenon of cheating in national exams.
A New law that will be discussed in the parliament will impose prison terms on students caught cheating or convicted of leaking national exams.
The Ministry of National Education is establishing new measures to fight cheating at the national baccalaureate examination, taking place from June 9 to 11. The Ministry has confirmed that specialized law enforcement units will be patrolling examination centers throughout the country with metal detectors to enforce proper test-taking procedures.
The Ministry of National Education has announced that there will be a new campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of cheating at the national exams in different high schools around the country. The competent authorities will also give devices to the teachers who will be supervising the exams to enable them to detect all electronic devices that are forbidden within the confines of the examination centers.
These measures have been a long time coming. The original proposal was made by the former Minister of National Education, Mohamed El Ouafa in 2013. However, it never materialized.
According to Fatima Ouahmi, director of communications and partnership programs at the Ministry of National Education, a new project is in the works and will be discussed by a special parliamentary commission on education. In this new project, sanctions can go up to MAD 20 000 or two years in prison.
These measures and laws arise as a preventive approach and a response to leaks of exams that have increased in recent years.
