Rabat - Morocco is among the top six countries with most UNESCO heritage sites in Africa.
The kingdom and Ethiopia are home to the most with nine heritage sites, followed by South Africa and Tunisia at eight sites each and Egypt and Algeria follow with seven heritage sites.
The UNESCO heritage sites in Morocco are: Rabat, Fes, Marrakech, Meknes, Volubilis, Ksar Ait-Ben-Haddou, Tetouan, Essaouira and Mazagan.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated 129 World Heritage Sites in Africa. These sites are located in 37 countries throughout the continent.
Four sites are shared between two countries: The Maloti-Drakensberg Park is shared by Lesotho and South Africa, the Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve is shared by Ivory Coast and Guinea and the Stone Circles of Senegambia are shared by Gambia and Senegal
The famous Victoria Falls is shared by Zimbabwe and Zambia. One site is shared among three countries, Sangha Trinational (Central African Republic, Cameroon and Congo).
UNESCO inscribed the first African heritage site in 1978, when the Island of Gorée of Senegal and the Rock-Hewn Churches of Ethiopia were chosen.
