Meknes - Moroccan-French comedian Jamel Debbouze will play the role of Hasan Al-Wazzan, also well known as Leo the African, in a new film co-produced by French Lebanese production companies.
The movie is based on a true story -it is an adaptation of Lebanese author Amine Maalouf’s inspiring novel Leo the African, which depicts the events Hassan experienced between 1488-1527 , the beginning of his journey in Fez, Morocco after fleeing the Spanish Inquisition, his many experiences as a merchant, performance of his hajj to mecca, and more.
According to movie news website Deadline, the movie is a co-production by Symply Entertainment Beirut and Paris-based 3B Productions.
The same source added that Jamel is a longtime fan of the novel, even naming his son Leon.
Jamel, who has already risen to fame as a comedian, actor, producer, director, and screenwriter in Europe and Africa, was born in 1975 in Paris.
