Rabat - Moroccan actress Loubna Abidar has moved to deny rumors that she called Islamic cleric Mohammed Fizzazi to discuss her 'repentance' following her role in the controversial prostitution-themed drama "Much Loved: Zine Li Fik".
Fizzazi, a reformed Moroccan Salafi-jihadist sheikh, announced in a YouTube video last month that Abidar called him to express regret for her role in Nabil Ayouch's film, which chronicles the daily lives of four prostitutes in Morocco's tourism hub, Marrakech.
But Abidar subsequently denied in an interview with a French magazine on Tuesday that any such conversation took place, adding that Fizzazi might have made up the story in order to protect her and to make her feel less worried.
For his part, Fizzazi, who was once sentenced for life in prison for his "ideological" role in the 2003 Casablanca bombings, has accused Abidar of being a "liar", stressing that the Moroccan actress had indeed called him crying and repenting of her 'sin'.
In the video, Fizzazi said that the heroine of the controversial film was forced to attend the awarding ceremony at the 8th edition of the Festival du Film Francophone d’Angoulême in France.
He claimed that was obliged to attend the ceremony to receive an award because of the contract commitment she signed with the film director.
Fizzazi wrote on his official Facebook page that "what Abidar has done does not deserve protection, but to deny that we had a conversation, this is another story."
