Rabat - Two officials at the delegation of the Ministry of Equipment and Transport in Fez appeared in court on Friday on corruption charges.

According to Al Ahdath Al Maghribiya and Al-Massae in their Monday issues, the two low-level officials, a manager and a technician, were arrested last Tuesday in a cafe, when they were about to receive the sum of 200,000 dirhams from the owner of a gas station.

The two officials were caught red-handed moments before they were to receive the bribe to make changes in the plan to reconstruct national road Number 8 in order to enable the owner of the gas station to benefit from an entry and exit for his station.

The officials had demanded the sum of 200,000 dirhams to come up with an alternative  formula to change the initial alignment of the road, so that it would pass by the gas station.

After lengthy negotiations with the officials, the owner was able to reach a deal and arranged a date, time and place to conclude the illegal transaction.

The owner of the service station was careful to keep evidence of the deal. He made copies of the banknotes to be given to the corrupt official and recorded all the telephone conversations before agreeing to hand over the money at a cafe in the city.

The [judicial police managed to uncover the transaction and caught the corrupt official red handed, along with a topographer, one of his accomplices.  They were both arrested at a café on the road to Ain Chkef in Fez.
