Rabat - Morocco could face a shortage of teachers specialized in mathematics, French and English in the next four years, according to the Supreme Council for Education, Training, and Scientific Research.

Supreme Council officials revealed the information during a media briefing held on Tuesday in Rabat, to present the council’s new strategic report.

The representatives told reporters that there are signs of shortages across Morocco as training centers for math, French and English are receiving few applications.

The Supreme Council for Education, Training, and Scientific Research has also urged the government to ensure enough teachers are being trained to avoid a drop in education standards.

According to the same source, universities in the Kingdom must create a greater number of Bachelor degrees focused on teaching these subjects to encourage undergraduates to become teachers.

The Supreme Council officials called on the Moroccan government to adopt this strategy in order to avoid vacancies in foreign languages and math by 2020.

They also urged  the government to motivate graduates to become professors by offering them financial and social support.

On the other hand, those involved in the educational system of Morocco said the Ministry of Education must deal with this situation carefully, warning that the level of examinees is already weak and this shortage could make it worse.

They expressed their concerns that training centers could be forced to accept applicants with low competences only to avoid vacancies and maintain an acceptable level of attendance at these institutions.

“If happened, this will make the student’s level in English, French and Math go even lower in the coming years,” Zouhair, a Moroccan English teacher told Morocco World News.
