Rabat - Minister Delegate for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mbarka Bouaida, urged Thursday in Rabat, the UN Security Council to uphold the "political solution" to the Sahara issue at the next vote on the extension of the mandate of MINURSO.
"We ask the Security Council to focus on the political solution" of the dispute rather than "secondary issues," said Bouaida, who was the guest of MAP Forum on "The issue of human rights in the Sahara and the UN system, the Moroccan interaction."
On Morocco's expectations with respect to the deadline, the Minister said that Kingdom hopes that the UN resolution will be voted in a few weeks to support the Moroccan initiative which grants broad autonomy to the southern provinces, and which may be "a first step" to "a political solution" to the dispute over the Sahara.
She said Morocco hopes to see a "recognition" of its efforts to promote human rights in the southern provinces and its positive interaction with the system UN on the matter.
