Morocco’s automobile production

Rabat - Morocco’s automotive industry is expected to significantly increase job opportunities in the next five years, as Morocco has become a favorite investment destination for many of the world’s leading car manufacturers.

Car manufacturers in Morocco will create 90,000 new jobs by 2020, announced president of the Moroccan Association for Industry and Automotive Trade (AMICA), Hakim Abdelmoumen, during a press conference on Friday.

Hakim Abdelmoumen added that Morocco is witnessing an “industrial revolution”, creating thousands of new jobs, thanks to major car manufacturers’ interest in investing in Morocco, including PSA Peugeot.

Last month, France’s PSA Peugeot Citroen announced that it will open a manufacturing plant in the city of Kenitra. The direct result of this new plant will be the creation of 4,500 direct jobs and 20,000 indirect jobs by the time the factory becomes operational in 2019.

Hakim Abdelmoumen noted that PSA Peugeot was encouraged to invest in Morocco after the success of Renault, which opened a plant in Tangier in 2012.

On May 5th 2015, the Renault-Nissan plant in Tangier celebrated the production of its 400,000th  vehicle since its inauguration in February 2012.

“Thanks to this progress in its production capacity, the Renault plant in Tangier will be one of the biggest Renault production units in the world”, said Jacques Prost, Directing Manager of Renault group in Morocco, in an earlier statement.

These investments boost Moroccan exports, contributing to a reduction in Morocco’s trade imbalance.

In a statement last month, Moulay Hafid Elalamy, Minister of Industry, Trade, Investment, and Digital Economy, said the automotive industry was the “main driver of Morocco’s exports in 2012-2014, with sales standing at 40 billion dirhams”.
