Rabat - Morocco's General Directorate for National Security (GDNS) has announced it will equip police officers on motorbikes with body cameras, Al Akhbar newspaper reported.

The program aims to help police officers fight crime. The body cameras can show what happens while officers are on duty or when they react in self-defense.

Morocco is following in the footsteps of many American states and European countries where police officers have been equipped with body cameras to enhance confidence in the police force.

The body cam will be installed onto the officer's helmet and will be turned on when officers on motorbikes are interacting with the public.

One of the many advantages of these types of cameras is that people will be less likely to behave as badly when they are aware that officers have cameras on them.

It is not yet known whether the database will be publicly accessible.

The Moroccan police force used their weapons 19 times in the last eight months, according to statistic recently released by the DGNS.

The shots killed one in Casablanca and injured many in their legs. Morocco's economic hub tops the cities where firearms have been used by the police, with a total six shots.

Benslimane, Sidi Kacem and Jerada come in second place with two shots. One shot was fired in the capital Rabat, Temara, Tetouan and the coastal city of Saadia.

The DGNS said that in all the cases officers used their weapons in self-defense.
