Rabat - Amid a storm of controversy over offensive remarks made in her Daily TV show, Egyptian TV presenter, Amany El-Khayat, has apologized on the air to Moroccans and the Moroccan King.
On Thursday, 24 hours after having lashed out at Morocco’s King and the ruling Islamists party with claims that the Moroccan economy is based on “prostitution, Amany El-Khayat, along with her news team, posted an apology to Morocco's government and people on her show's official FaceBook page for the "misunderstanding" that her statements had precipitated during the show.
“I apologize to every Moroccan who felt insulted by my remarks,” Khayat said in her morning talk-show “Sabah On,” aired on the privately owned ONTV channel.
“I got carried away. I only meant to criticize those who have abused the Islamic religion, but I failed,” she added.
Yesterday, Amany El-Khayat lashed out directly at King Mohammed VI, accusing him of using religion falsely to give the Moroccan people the illusion that no other Muslim or Arab country defends the rights of the Palestinian people more than Morocco.
However, today she seems to have retracted her statements, stressing that “a misunderstanding.”
“I apologize to the king of Morocco and every Arab official who misunderstood my attack on those who use religion as a political façade, such as Khaled Meshaal, the head of the political bureau of Hamas,” El-Khayat explained.
She goes on to add that she has never visited Morocco. Still, “I have read many books about great Moroccan thinkers, such as Mohammed Abed Al-Jaberi. His book ‘The critique of the Arab Mind’ has influenced my life.”
